Te Pūtea Matua is New Zealand’s central bank, responsible for promoting the prosperity and wellbeing of New Zealanders and safeguarding a stable, resilient and productive financial system. Operating with statutory independence, the Bank plays a central role in maintaining trust and confidence across the economy, working closely with regulated entities, government, financial institutions and international partners.
The Assistant Governor Financial Stability is one of the Bank’s most senior leadership positions. Reporting directly to the Governor and serving on the Executive Leadership Team, the role leads the Financial Stability Group, overseeing system‑wide risk assessment, macro‑prudential policy, prudential supervision, enforcement and resolution. With a team of ~140 specialists across banking, insurance, non‑bank deposit‑taking and financial market infrastructure, this role is pivotal in strengthening resilience across New Zealand’s financial system and safeguarding the public interest.
The Assistant Governor will provide strategic leadership across a broad multidisciplinary portfolio, ensuring high‑quality prudential advice, maintaining robust regulatory oversight and partnering effectively across the Council of Financial Regulators (CoFR) and other stakeholders. They will also play an important enterprise leadership role, contributing to whole‑of‑Bank strategy, culture and cross‑functional collaboration, while integrating Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Te Ao Māori, climate considerations and financial inclusion into policy and decision‑making.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced executive from central banking, prudential regulation, financial stability policy or similarly complex regulatory environments. They will bring seasoned judgement, strong stakeholder credibility, and the ability to lead senior specialists in high‑scrutiny contexts. Proven experience influencing at senior levels, building capability in large expert teams and navigating complex financial system dynamics will be essential.
This is a rare and nationally significant leadership opportunity at the centre of New Zealand’s financial system.
