The Bioeconomy Science Institute is New Zealand’s newest Public Research Organisation (PRO) formed through the merger of AgResearch, Plant & Food Research, Manaaki Whenua – Landcare Research, and Scion. The Bioeconomy Science Institute exists to power New Zealand’s transition to a circular, resilient, and prosperous bioeconomy. Through world-leading science, the Bioeconomy Science Institute drives innovation across agriculture, horticulture, forestry, aquaculture, biotechnology, and manufacturing.
About the Role:
As a key member of the Leadership Team, the Chief Communications and Engagement Officer will play a pivotal role in shaping the Bioeconomy Science Institute’s strategic narrative and strengthening its national and global presence. You will lead the Communications and Government relations functions, ensuring they are well-structured, communications are consistent and compelling, future-focused, and fully aligned with the Institute’s mission.
- Lead, inspire, and grow a high-performing team that is motivated to deliver lasting impact for the Institute.
- Build trusted, influential relationships with the Board, leadership, government, iwi organisations, sector bodies, and key stakeholders.
- Represent the Institute with credibility and mana in national and international forums, strengthening its voice and presence.
- Partner closely with the Chief Executive to shape strategy and foster enduring, trust-based relationships with key shareholders.
- Drive ambitious strategies, deliver measurable outcomes, and ensure resources are managed wisely to support growth and long-term success.
Background, Skills & Experience:
The ideal candidate will be a proven leader in communications and government affairs, with the capability to shape narratives that influence at national and international levels. They will bring credibility in navigating government systems with the ability to translate complex science into compelling messages. With a strong track record of leading high-performing teams, the successful candidate will demonstrate cultural competence, strategic foresight, and the ability to engage confidently in diverse settings.
- Extensive experience designing and delivering integrated communication strategies across internal, external, and digital channels.
- Deep knowledge of government systems, policy development, and public sector engagement, with proven ability to build trusted relationships across central and local government.
- Skilled in managing complex reputational issues, media relations, and crisis communication with sound judgment.
- Demonstrated understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and tikanga Māori, with experience engaging meaningfully with Māori communities and organisations.
- Strong ability to translate scientific and strategic outcomes into narratives that resonate with policymakers, funders, and the public.
- Proven leadership of high-performing, multidisciplinary teams, fostering collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
