The organisation:
The Bioeconomy Science Institute (BSI) is New Zealand’s newest Public Research Organisation, formed through the merger of Crown Research Institutes (CRIs) AgResearch, Plant & Food Research, Manaaki Whenua – Landcare Research, and Scion. The BSI exists to power New Zealand’s transition to a circular, resilient, and prosperous bioeconomy. Through world-leading science, the BSI drives innovation across agriculture, horticulture, forestry, aquaculture, biotechnology, and manufacturing.
The CPCO role:
As BSI enters its foundational phase, the Chief People & Culture Officer (CPCO) will partner with the CEO and senior leaders to integrate a workforce of ~2,500 talented staff, build a cohesive organisational design, and deliver a unified people strategy aligned with the values and aspirations of the new organisation. They will ensure BSI attracts, develops, and supports a high-performing, inclusive workforce that drives scientific impact and sustainable growth. They will champion BSI’s commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, lead employment relations and union engagement, health, safety and wellbeing, DEI, and more. Blending strategic leadership with operational oversight, the CPCO will build the cultural, leadership, and workforce capability essential for success in a complex, multi-site organisation.
This is a rare and meaningful opportunity to help lead one of the world’s largest publicly owned primary sector and environmental science institutions, positioning Aotearoa New Zealand at the forefront of bioeconomy innovation and contributing to a prosperous, sustainable future.
