This article in the Harvard Business Review urges executives to seize the opportunities arising from this unprecedented time. While multiple sectors are fraught with uncertainty, extraordinary candidates may be moveable or ‘poachable’ in this more unstable environment. A focus on soft skills, such as collaboration, change management and influencing will become highly sought-after competencies, as companies rebuild and reposition toward a different future. It is in contrast with what usually happens in trying times, when businesses are scrambling to cut costs and stay afloat. Often, hiring freezes are implemented for ‘survival’. This article suggests this popular approach may be short-sighted. Claudio Fernandez-Araoz argues the most successful business leaders continue to invest in exceptional talent; people who will help “build the new building” – as the “fire” rages on and threatens the existing establishment.
