Over the last 50 years, New Zealand’s electricity system has evolved to one that balances security, equity and environmental sustainability. As the kaitiaki of electricity, the Electricity Authority’s purpose is to enhance New Zealanders’ lives, prosperity, and environment through electricity.
The Electricity Authority uses its position to support New Zealand’s transition to a low emissions economy and goal to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, with ambitious strategic priorities focusing on the decentralisation of energy resources, the digitisation of the energy system, and decarbonisation.
The Authority is an Independent Crown Entity, responsible for overseeing the operation of the electricity system and markets as well as regulating the industry. The Authority develops, enforces and administers the electricity market rules, and it also monitors market performance.
The Electricity Authority is recruiting a new Chief Executive at a time of exciting change and evolution in the sector. Reporting to the Board of the Authority, the new Chief Executive will provide strong, visible leadership to the organisation, work with the Board to set strategy, and lead engagement with stakeholders. The role offers many opportunities to make major and rewarding contributions to New Zealand’s economy and the wellbeing of its people.
The ideal candidate will bring a track record as an effective senior leader or chief executive and will have excellent stakeholder management skills. Experience in the electricity industry or a related sector/organisation (e.g. regulator, regulated utility, or infrastructure provider) will be advantageous. Familiarity with the demands of the public sector environment is also desirable.
